Securities Donation

You can donate appreciated securities to the Belgrade Regional Conservation Alliance (BRCA). Such gifts will allow the BRCA to acquire these lands and ensure that their valuable and irreplaceable resources will be preserved and wisely managed. Your support will help ensure that this significant recreational and conservation resource will be enjoyed by outdoor enthusiasts in Central Maine for generations to come.

Gifts of securities, real estate and other appreciated assets are welcome and offer exceptional tax benefits. The BRCA is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501 (c)(3) charitable organization, and all gifts to the Alliance are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Our Federal Tax Identification Number is 04-3047156.

Your gift may be pledged to be paid over two to three years, with payments made on a quarterly, semi-annual or annual schedule.

Contributing appreciated securities to a charitable organization is easy to do. It involves no additional cost to you and can provide significant tax savings that actually reduce the financial impact of the donation for you.

For example, say you were thinking of making a $1,000 donation to the BRCA. If you make out a check for this amount, you could claim a corresponding income tax deduction. But, let's say you bought stock a few years ago which has significantly appreciated in value. If you should sell $1,000 worth of that stock, you would have to pay a hefty capital gains tax. Instead, if you instruct your broker to transfer $1,000 worth of that stock to the BRCA, you pay no capital gains tax and you can claim the full amount of the appreciated value of the shares ($1,000) as an income tax deduction.The value of the donated securities to a charitable organization is the same as cash, but you realize the extra advantages of avoiding capital gains tax while claiming a tax deduction based on the full, appreciated value of the shares.

To make a donation of securities, have your broker wire the donated securities to the BRCA's account at Golden Pond. Please have your broker or yourself identify the donor when transferring the securities, as your personal identity is lost in the process. It is also helpful to have the name of the securities and the number of shares, so that your gift may be properly acknowledged, both for your satisfaction and for tax purposes.
